Lazio coach Maurizio Sarri resigned from his post on Tuesday, after his team’s third consecutive defeat in the league the day before Monday at home against Udinese (1-2), according to the Italian media and in particular Sport Mediaset . Questioned by AFP, Lazio refused to confirm or deny this information.

With 12 defeats in 28 days, Lazio currently occupies 9th place in Serie A, outside the European places for next season, and was eliminated in the round of 16 of the Champions League by Bayern Munich. Lazio remain in contention in the Italian Cup, where they will face Juventus in the semi-finals next month.

Maurizio Sarri joined Lazio in 2021 after a sabbatical following his league title with Juventus, at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The 65-year-old coach, who also won the Europa League in 2019 with Chelsea, is best known for the flamboyant Napoli team that came close to winning the domestic championship in 2018.
