What future for the Super League? While A22, promoter of the competition, presented the outlines of its project this Thursday – following the ruling of the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) – many major clubs from the Old Continent publicly lambasted…and announced that they would not take part. This is the case, among others, of Paris SG, Olympique de Marseille, Manchester City, Manchester United, Arsenal, Atlético Madrid, Sevilla FC, FC Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund, Inter Milan, or even AS Roma. More generally, for the moment, only Real Madrid, FC Barcelona and SSC Naples have said they are ready to participate in the (semi-)closed league.
Except that according to one of the promoters of the competition, certain clubs – and not just a few – would have given their agreement in secret, while publicly speaking out against it. “We have a lot [who said yes, editor’s note], because there is a lot of pressure. There are a lot of people who made statements today [Thursday, editor’s note], and who called us before and after to tell us: ‘We were forced to do it’. Obliged by the people who control football and the monopoly,” assured Anas Laghrari, one of the co-founders of A22, in an interview with RMC Sport this Thursday. Before providing details on these formations: “These are all clubs which have financial fair play problems, which can be sanctioned at any time, which are vulnerable. So we take advantage of their vulnerability,” he said. We will probably have to wait (a little?) to find out more. One thing is certain, the Super League should continue to be talked about in the coming days.
