The Frenchwoman Alizé Cornet, who plays at the WTA 500 in Strasbourg the penultimate tournament of her career before Roland-Garros, was eliminated on Monday in the first round just like her compatriot Diane Parry, while Fiona Ferro qualified for the round of 16.
Cornet, currently 107th in the world and who has only one victory over a Top 100 player this season (against the Belgian Yanina Wickmayer, n°83, in February), was beaten by the American Emma Navarro, 24th in the ranking WTA, 6-4, 6-1.
The 34-year-old from Nice will play Roland-Garros next week, where she plans to end her career. She benefits from an invitation to the tournament, her 69th consecutive singles grand slam, a record.
Another Frenchwoman involved, Diane Parry (61st) was eliminated on Monday by the Ukrainian Elina Svitolina, 17th in the world, defending champion in Strasbourg and seeded n°7, with a score of 6-3, 6-4. The match, which started on Sunday evening, was interrupted at night.
Also competing in Strasbourg, Fiona Ferro (142nd), holder of an invitation, won her first round against the Russian Erika Andreeva (101st), from qualifying, 6-2, 6-2. She will face another Ukrainian, Anhelina Kalinina, on Tuesday.
Last Frenchwoman in the table, Clara Burel (43rd), semi-finalist in 2023, and who won her first round on Sunday against the Czech Karolina Pliskova (51st), will challenge Elina Svitolina on Tuesday for a place in the quarter-final.
