The Italian Jannik Sinner, seeded N.1 and recent winner of the Australian Open, qualified for the final of the ATP 500 tournament in Rotterdam after his victory against the Dutchman Tallon Griekspoor 6-2, 6- 4, Saturday evening.
On Sunday, the world number 4 will face Australian Alex De Minaur, 11th player in the world, who had gained the upper hand earlier in the day over Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov 6-4, 6-3.
Particularly effective in serving, the redhead from Trentino gained the upper hand over his opponent in just over an hour. “In recent days, I have put a lot of intensity into my training. Today was the key because Tallon often put pressure on me,” explained the Italian. “I conceded a lot of break points. But I always remained lucid and efficient in those moments,” he rejoiced.
Griekspoor suffered from a foot injury and was treated at the start of the second set, conceding “not having negotiated his service games well”. “It’s an incredible start to the season. I feel so serene,” said Sinner, who will take two weeks of rest after his expedition to the flat country. Sinner will logically be favorite on Sunday against De Minaur, an opponent against whom he has never lost in six confrontations. The Italian is also undefeated since the start of the season and has just scored a 14th consecutive victory in 2024.
As for De Minaur, in search of an eighth ATP title and who celebrated his 25th birthday this Saturday, he will climb to 9th place in the world rankings and enter the Top 10 for the first time.
“I feel very good this week. This is a great birthday present as last year. I’m so happy because Rotterdam is a great tournament. I wouldn’t want to spend my birthday anywhere else. Grigor (Dimitrov) is so talented, he’s a very good player. Today, I had to be flawless to win against him. I’m in the final, it’s a great moment of happiness,” commented the Australian.
