The Polish Iga Swiatek, world No.2, easily dominated the American Coco Gauff (N.3) 6-0, 7-5 in the shock of the group stage of the WTA Masters in Cancun (Mexico) on Wednesday.

Swiatek thus has two victories in two matches and has taken a big step towards the semi-finals of the competition, while awaiting the other match of the day between the Tunisian Ons Jabeur and the Czech Marketa Vondrousova.

Gauff, completely out of the game in the first round (11 unforced errors in 40 contested points), held up better in a disjointed second round, while continuing to give away a lot of points (5 double faults). The 19-year-old American, winner of the US Open in September, won her first group match and can still hope to reach the final draw (semi-finals on Saturday, final on Sunday).

Swiatek (22 years old), winner at Roland-Garros in 2023, could take advantage of the tournament to take the place of world No.1 from Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka, placed in the other group, not yet certain of reaching the semi-finals.
