Ugo Humbert, 34th in the world, beat Chilean Nicolas Jarry (N.27) 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the first round of the Masters 1000 in Toronto on Tuesday. The Frenchman will face in the second round the American Taylor Fritz, world No.9 and recent winner at the Atlanta tournament at the end of July, where Humbert had reached the semi-finals.

The 25-year-old Frenchman confirms his good form during this American tour, even if he had to forfeit before his quarter-final against Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov in Washington last week, due to pain in his left calf. Faced with Jarry, Humbert managed to overturn the match after the loss of the first round to win after 2:36 of play. The other Frenchman still in contention in Toronto, Gaƫl Monfils, will be opposed on Wednesday to the Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas, World No.4 and Sunday winner of the Los Cabos tournament.
