“We have the impression that no one is listening to us”: the Czech Marketa Vondrousova followed in the footsteps of world No.1 Aryna Sabalenka on Monday evening by sharply criticizing the WTA for the organization of the Cancun Masters, which is played on a short built for the occasion.

“My first WTA Finals (the new name given to the Masters, editor’s note) are not at all what I imagined. We work hard all year to reach these Finals and in the end, it’s a big disappointment,” the player, who won Wimbledon this year, wrote on Instagram.

The Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka had already deplored on the social network the state of the court on which the competition takes place and deplored the “lack of respect” of the WTA towards the players.

“The stadium is not at all ready for the matches and I have the impression that the people of the WTA are absolutely not interested in what we – who are supposed to play on this court – feel”, writes again Vondrousova, who also posted a video of a rally from her 7-6 (7/3), 6-0 loss against Iga Swiatek during which the ball did not bounce correctly.

“We have the impression that no one listens to us and is interested in our opinion. It’s very sad,” she adds.

The Mexican seaside resort was officially designated to host the prestigious end-of-season tournament only on September 7, after the WTA ruled out the possibility of organizing the Masters in Saudi Arabia, an idea which had caused controversy, particularly among former players Martina Navratilova and Chris Evert.

The Masters brings together the eight singles players and the eight best-ranked doubles pairs at the end of the season at the end of the year. The event took place last year in Fort Worth, Texas.
