German Alexander Zverev, finalist in 2020 but absent through injury last year, qualified for the third round of the US Open on Thursday by dismissing his compatriot Daniel Altmaier (53rd in the world) 7-6 (7/1) , 3-6, 6-4, 6-3. Zverev (12th) will face Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov (19th) on Saturday for a place in the round of 16.
The latter had not passed the second round at Flushing Meadows since his semi-final in 2019. On Thursday, he beat the 2012 winner Andy Murray (37th) 6-3, 6-4, 6-1.
