A Wimbledon,
It’s a defeat that will be hard to digest for the French number 1. After a big fight, Caroline Garcia, too inconstant, smashed against the Czech wall. The Lyonnaise constantly attacked the quarter-finalist of the last edition, who defended perfectly. After completely missing the decisive game, the Lyonnaise was able to react in the second act. Solid in service, more regular in return, she got the better of her opponent (6-4).
Initially scheduled on court n°2, this match had been moved to court n°18. And due to the lack of light, the two players, then in a set everywhere and were invited to end the match on court n°1, with a closed roof.
It all started pretty well for Garcia who broke his opponent in the 5th game but was caught right away. The 5th in the world saved two break points with panache in the eighth game, but lacked lucidity when she in turn got two break points at 4-4. The French number one saved a match point at 5-4, before cracking in the twelfth game. The change of court finally smiled on the Czech, already fallen from Garcia last season in the round of 16 at Church Road.
The 29-year-old Lyonnaise was the last survivor of the French camp, out of the twenty in the first round of the men’s (16) and women’s (4) draws, to be able to qualify for the knockout stages. The adventure is already over… Frustrating, very frustrating.
