Prince William apologized in a social media video on Saturday as he will not travel to Sydney for the Spain-England Women’s World Cup final on Sunday.
“The Lionesses, I want to wish you good luck for tomorrow”, begins the heir to the throne, in this video where he appears next to his daughter Charlotte, a soccer ball on his knees.
“We’re sorry we can’t be there in person, but we’re so proud of all you’ve accomplished and the millions of people you’ve inspired here and around the world,” William continues. “Good luck Lionesses,” adds 8-year-old Charlotte.
The Prince of Wales, who is the chairman of the Football Association (FA), the governing body of English football, has been criticized for his decision not to travel to Sydney.
Prime Minister Rishi Sunak will also not travel to Australia for the final. The government will be represented by Foreign Secretary James Cleverly and Culture Minister Lucy Frazer.
This is the first time that the English women’s football team, crowned European champions in 2022, has taken part in a World Cup final.
