Australia, co-organizer of the Women’s World Cup, started its tournament with a narrow victory against Ireland (1-0), despite the absence due to injury of its star captain Sam Kerr, Thursday in Sydney.

After the victory of the other host country, New Zealand, winner of Norway in Auckland (1-0), the Australians won in group B thanks to a penalty goal from Steph Catley (52nd), in a sold-out stadium and in front of 75,784 spectators, a local record for women’s football.
