Moroccan Nouhaila Benzina (25) became the first veiled footballer to play in a World Cup this Sunday, in a victory against South Korea (1-0). A day of firsts, therefore, since the players of Reynald Pedros signed their first success in their history in the World Cup after falling heavily against Germany (6-0) during the week.

Fifa lifted the ban on the wearing of the veil in 2014. In France as in other countries, the measure is still in force. Last June, the Council of State upheld the hijab ban set out in Article 1 of the French Football Federation (FFF), deeming it “appropriate and proportionate”. This article dismisses “any wearing of a sign or outfit ostensibly manifesting a political, philosophical, religious or trade union affiliation”. The Hijabeuses collective wanted to cancel this article.
