Briton Elfyn Evans won Rally Finland on Sunday, the 9th round of the WRC world championship, and is closing in on the championship leader, Finland’s Kalle Rovanperä, who had to retire. Evans now has 145 points in the championship to 170 in Rovanperä, while a win is worth a maximum of 30 points and there are four events left to run by the end of the season.
The Welshman was ahead of the Belgian Thierry Neuville (Hyundai) on Sunday, who remains 3rd in the provisional championship standings with 134 points, and the Japanese Takamoto Katsuta (Toyota). After the abandonment on Friday when Rovanperä, reigning world champion, flew over the debates, steadily increasing his lead over Neuville, which he finally outstripped by 39.1 seconds at the finish.
He also won the 22nd and final stage, the Power Stage, which earned him 5 additional championship points. The next event is Rally Greece from September 7-10.
