Kazakh player Elena Rybakina, number 3 in the WTA rankings, withdrew from illness on Monday at the Eastbourne grass tournament, one week before the start of Wimbledon, of which she is the defending champion. Rybakina, 24, was scheduled to face China’s Wang Xiyu but she did not play this match due to a “viral illness”.
She had already had to throw in the towel before the third round at Roland-Garros, due to illness before being knocked out in the second round of the Berlin tournament last week, by Croatian Donna Vekic (23rd) 6-7 (1/7), 6-3, 6-4.
