LONDON – veganism could be protected by british law, as a religion, a predisposition to sexual or ethnic minorities. The question will be decided for the first time by a court, in a landmark ruling filed this morning in Norwich, a city 160 kilometres north-east of London.
The judges will have to assess the appeal of Jordi Casamitjana, a vegan who has denounced his employer, the League Against Cruel Sports (League against cruel), accusing him of unfair dismissal.
The man claims to have lost the spot to have revealed that the company has invested its pension fund in companies involved in animal testing, undergoing therefore a discrimination based on his veganism. The company, however, says that the reason for the dismissal is only the misconduct of the employee, and does not dispute the fact that veganism should be protected by law.
The judges of the labour court will have to establish, ” reports the Bbc, if being a vegan is a “faith philosophy” similar to a religious belief. The author of the petition defines a “vegan ethics”, which is the campaign to convince others to do the same. His beliefs affect every aspect of life: for example goes to work on foot rather than bus, to avoid that the wheels of the vehicle on which travels crush insects or birds along the way.
When he warned the employer, an association for the protection of animals, on the fact that investing the pension fund in companies that do animal testing was a contradiction with the spirit of the company itself, the League Against Cruel Sports has taken action. Then he publicly denounced the fact and was fired.
In the appeal, Casamitjana says he was discriminated against on the basis of his veganism “ethical”. Both the one who makes the vegan diet, or who professes to be a vegan, ethical, and eat only food derived from plants. But the vegan ethical go beyond, trying to exclude any form of animal exploitation in their behavior.
The judges will have to establish, therefore, whether the veganism of this sort is comparable to a “religious or philosophical” and as such falls into one of nine categories protected by the Equality Act 2010, a law on the equality of rights without distinction of sex, religion or any other characteristic social. If the appeal is accepted, the other think you could ask for similar protection, citing the ruling as a precedent.
The case arrives in front of the judges on the day in which the statistics indicate a significant decline in the consumption of meat and pork in the United Kingdom; and, while Greggs, the higher the food chain, the national, launches a sandwich of meat the vegan on the wings of the success obtained last year from his sandwich to the sausage vegan.
