According to the London Fire Brigade, a large amount of chlorine gas was released into the Aquatics Center at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park east London after a chemical reaction.
The brigade stated on Twitter that “while we ventilate the premises,” they would ask residents to close their doors and windows while they do so.
Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park was constructed for the 2012 Olympic Games and hosted them. Park officials stated earlier that there were “a lot of casualties with breathing problems” who were being treated by ambulance workers.
According to them, the area had been cordoned off and was being evacuated. It wasn’t immediately known how many people were in the pool at that time.
According to the British capital’s ambulance service, it was responding alongside police and firefighters to a major incident.
Sadiq Khan, London Mayor, stated that he was in close touch with emergency services and advised people to avoid the park.
Although chlorine used to kill bacteria in swimming pools is safe, it is extremely toxic when taken as a gas.
