A success for animal rights activists, a nightmare for food lovers: The US metropolis of New York, the controversial delicacy Foie Gras banned. The city Council on Wednesday voted for a law according to which the sale of foie Gras will be banned starting in October 2022.

In case of infringement, to threaten fines between 500 and 2000 dollars per violation. The law needs to be of mayor Bill de Blasio signed.

“This is a historic day for the rights of animals in New York City,” said Matthew Dominguez, of the animal protection group of voters for the rights of animals. Foie Gras producers announced, however, legal steps against the ban.

“We will give you in court with a vigorous Kick in the butt,” said the founder of the manufacturer’s Hudson Valley Foie Gras, Izzy Yanay. “I have 400 people working for 30 years for me. To these people, a tragedy comes.” Only in January the U.S. Supreme court had upheld a ban of foie Gras in the state of California after a 15-year-old legal dispute.

While Foie Gras is considered a delicacy, criticize animal rights activists, that ducks and geese suffer at the Fattening: Prior to slaughter, the animals are fed for several weeks with a grain forced, until their livers are completely engorged fat to a multiple.

farmers reject the allegations of animal rights activists as exaggerated. In some countries, the production of foie Gras is banned, including Denmark, the United Kingdom and Australia.
