NEW YORK – John Lewis, the icon of civil rights, announces that he is sick of cancer. “In the course of routine checks I was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer at the fourth stage,” announces Lewis, democrat of the U.s. Congress and the icon of the struggle for civil rights in the 60s, when it was one of the leaders of the movement that fought for the emancipation of blacks in America.
Lewis has been one of the protagonists of the march to Selma, where he was wounded. Lewis was one of those who crossed the bridge, Edmund Pettus, a symbol of the bloody facts rose to the chronicles as ‘Bloody Sunday’, when peaceful protesters took to the square, trying to cross the bridge to claim their civil rights and were assaulted by the police. The images shocked America and opened the road to approval, in the same year of the Voting Rights, the law that allowed blacks to vote.
