ROME. Called Weaving a home, the”weaving a home”, in Italian) and is a tent innovative designed with an ambitious goal: to change the lives of the 13 million syrian refugees both inside and outside of the Country. Designed by the young architect of jordanian origins, and with canadian citizenship Abeer Seikaly, the tent is able to absorb and transform the solar energy into electric energy, immagazzinandola in battery specifications, and in the upper part is equipped with a system for rainwater collection which is filtered and stored in pockets suitable to be consumed by its inhabitants in case of need.

Composed of tubes, in high strength plastic, shaped into sinusoidal curves that can expand and close according to the needs, so as to be disassembled easily to be transported, is about two meters high, wide five, and made of a technical fabric double-layer, weather-resistant, and capable of adattaris to the different climatic requirements; the canvas in the plot is inspired by the traditional techniques for the creation of baskets, and the design imitates the skin of the snake, to reproduce the flexibility.

To adapt Weaving at home to the external climate has been installed inside a dual system of ventilation: the air gaps between a “scale” of the fabric and the other retain inside heat in the winter, and in summer, they create additional steps to facilitate the creation of the flow of air. You can also install a toilet as well as small showers that take advantage of the same reserves accumulated during the days of rain; a drainage system to avoid internal flooding in the event of thunderstorms.

In 2013, the ingenious house-mobile has been honored with the prestigious Lexus design award, a competition organized by the magazine Designboom in collaboration with the car manufacturer Lexus. The war in Syria, according to the Unhcr, has already caused more than 5.5 million refugees, only among those registered. Millions of people have been forced to leave their Country, taking refuge in the refugee camps in Lebanon, Jordan, Turkey and other neighboring Countries. “I would like this tent to allow the refugees to feel safe, sheltered from the turmoil of the outside world. I wish it had a place where they can start to build their lives, a retreat that give them the feeling of being at home,” explains Saikely.

The use of a housing solution of its kind – born from the observation and from the analysis of the behaviour of the nomadic populations, but also equipped with the latest technologies of renewable energy – could really make a difference in their lives, however, the technologies that are used to store water, and electricity are complex, and fit to a model of the house transportable, it is even more so. “We’re still working to improve some of its parameters, and add additional devices,” concludes Saikely, “in the future should be even more lightweight, having a size that is more balanced and generate all the energy that is needed”.
