this is a requirement of the civil side, nobody expected: The FDP is demanding that the city Velotunnel. In a postulate of party President and local councillor Severin Pflüger and his Parliament colleague Marcel Muller are demanding that the city Council Velotunnel between the Quarters, Oerlikon, Wipkingen, Affoltern and Höngg checks – “Züri-Nord” and the Limmat valley to be connected in order for the two cyclists underground. In addition, the city government should clarify whether the letten tunnel for cyclists could be made usable. The SP proposes a Velotunnel between Wipkingen and Oerlikon.

A Tunnel for cars, others for bikes

“I have been approached two weeks ago, while shopping from a neighborhood resident who told me about the idea of Velotunnel,” says Plowman. He had discussed the proposal in his party. And he came to the result: If the motorist will receive a rose garden tunnel, the city Tunnel for the cyclists.

“would be Velotunnels efficient routes for bicycles.”FDP local councillor Severin Pflüger

In his proposal, he has yesterday filed Wednesday, writes Plowman, that North of Zurich and the Limmattal with the Velo are connected only through unattractive routes through the Milchbuck, the bucheggplatz and the ETH hönggerberg. The topography was a major reason, why there rarely the bike will be elected. “Velotunnel would overcome not only the topography, but also efficient to represent fast routes for bicycles.”

Underground through the city center

To the proposal with the letten tunnel Pflüger writes that the most important Veloverbindungen in Zürich through the city centre led. The lines were not very attractive, need to share cyclists the space with pedestrians, motorists and the public traffic and always slow down or speed up. With the Tunnel, the high-traffic route between the Latvians and the Stadelhofen could be connected. “At best, a lift connection to the University district would be to check.”

This proposal is probably not easy to implement. Because of the Tunnel in places, threatened to collapse, he was filled between October 2002 and spring 2004. 5500 trucks dumped about 50’000 cubic meters of unpolluted excavation and more than 5300 cubic meters of gravel to the fine. The two-kilometre-long former railroad tunnel was at 27. In may 1989, been shut down.

Similar idea in the SP

The FDP-postulate comes just two weeks after SP-municipal Councilor Simone Brander has submitted a similar idea a written request to the city Council. Their political funds is weaker, however, in advance Brander and eleven are signatories of the SP concrete. Ask the city government if he had considered the idea of a Velotunnels between Oerlikon, Wipkingen ever.

“In discussions in Wipkingen, the idea of such a tunnel came up again and again.”Simone Brander, SP

Brander justified their proposal this way: “In discussions in Wipkingen, the idea of such a tunnel came up again and again. People asked, whether there is parallel to the railway tunnel might still be a security great that you could repurpose a Velotunnel.” The request, submitted, now, because you know yourself has no answer to this. That Brander calls for a Tunnel, is not without irony: it is one of the most vehement opponents of the rose garden tunnel for the cars.

Brander yourself to find it is not necessarily “mega-great”, the route underground with the Velo back. Enthusiastic is because the President of the Greens in the city. Councilman Felix Moser writes in a column in the SP-the weekly P. S.: “With the Velotunnel I would not have to go through the Milchbuck, but could sweat without to (and in the rain even without a wet pedals) in the city.”

Support SP, and the Green Pflügers initiative, will the city government with new Velotunneln deal.

Already a lot of work planning that Velotunnels to perform below the main railway station in the city. For years, it is planned, is always more expensive and delayed constantly. Currently there is talk of one opening in 2024.
