Whether it is a Sensation or not, one can’t deny Mazda even the worst doubters: the first self-igniting gasoline (see box) have been made by the Japanese, at least, a pretty stupid word popular: this Otto, composed of Diesel and Otto (gasoline engine).

As the first production car in the world, the new Mazda 3 is such a Diesotto on-the-go or Skyactiv-X-engine, as it’s called by the manufacturer. The compact car as a five-door Hatchback and four-door Sedan in the identical length. We drive for two weeks, the four-door. And the task facing us is clear: We want to resolve the equation with respect to X, i.e. the real consumption to be determined.

Mazda promises quite a lot with his X-engine: reduced emissions, improved exhaust emissions, more torque, a high smoothness. With 180 HP from two litres of displacement, the engine is expected to operate in the most economical variant, with 4.5 litres. At least according to the earlier consumption cycle NEDC. For the test vehicle Mazda specifies a consumption under the WLTP cycle of 6.2 litres. That sounds less spectacular.

the Mix, it comes in

We draw a first balance sheet: a Lot of short-haul and no special care, resulting in an average of 6.5 liters. This is respectable for a fairly full-blown sedan, but no more. Let’s try it again, to specifically defensive and a sprinkle longer distances. And lo and behold, all of a sudden, we recorded a fuel consumption of 4.9 to 5.1 litres, so in the spheres, in which, for example, Toyota with its full-hybrid vehicles is on the way.

If you pass on the wonder of the motor times the outside, the new Mazda 3 is not emphasized to be innovative, but rather a pleasant conglomeration of Proven. You almost get the feeling that the Japanese could have been anywhere for inspiration. The driver reminds centric Cockpit of the BMW, the operation on the centre console of the Audi, and the keys with the side buttons to Volvo – only that he was not covered at Mazda with leather.

all-wheel drive only in the Hatchback

Instead of today’s common virtual Cockpits, there’s analogue round instruments, but in combination with a large format Head-up Display. A bit of pragmatism needs to be, because for the price of 39’290 Swiss franc, the Japanese to provide your Limousine, quasi-in, fully equipped with infotainment system, Bose sound system, LED headlights, assistance package, fine leather seats and the like. Extra costs at test, only the Metallic paint and the carpet deposits the car.

all of this is Packaged rather sporty, with a Front in the cat style and a wedge-shaped side section. And so, the Mazda 3 drives well also.

The Sprint to 100 kph he completed in a respectable 8.9 seconds. The force is created, without Turbo, right-linear. Directly on the Gas of the X-Motor is not on. But the need to not give a fuck. Who occurs with the Mazda all the time, has nothing to the engine of the Miracle.

The sedan, the falls, is well balanced, drives clean and grippy through corners. A pity that this body variant plays in Switzerland, hardly a role. The Japanese reinforce the effect, by offering the Sedan, only with front-wheel drive and automatic transmission. The Hatchback but it is also available with all-wheel drive. And it is with X-Motor and hand control. In this configuration, the lowest fuel consumption should be possible.
