the Protests have been going on in the capital since 22 February, when Bouteflika message his candidacy to the presidential elections later in the spring. It would be his fifth candidacy, something that is contrary to the country’s constitution.
the 82-year-old Bouteflika, who, during a few weeks of time had undergone treatment at a swiss hospital, withdrew his candidacy on 11 march, as a result of the protests, but announced shortly thereafter that the elections will be postponed indefinitely. He announced that he will remain during the transition period, something that caused new protests in the country.
also internally within their own party, the FNL, which have gone out indicated that they support the protests.
Bouteflika has been president of Algeria since 1999, but has rarely been seen in public since he suffered a stroke in 2013.
