Everywhere in the capital, they have been. The damn green walls, which for years have made it out, among other things, Kongens Nytorv, copenhagen city hall and Østerbrosiden of the copenhagen lakes.

The painted particle board has been set up to protect the people of copenhagen delicate eye for metroringens a total of 17 building sites, but they have also formed the framework for thousands of employees daily lives.

There, behind the walls they have dug, drilled, cast and bricked, made electricity, and paved. In there, hidden to the inquisitive glance, they have worked very hard to build something out of nothing.

Master builder Michael Flowers is one of them. He has been a mason for 39 years, if you count his apprenticeship with, is employed in the Island Murerfirma and worked for three years on the new metroring.

– I have been to many places, around the 15 stations we worked on: the marble church, the Old Beach, Sønder Boulevard, Nørrebroskakten, Nuuk’s Place and so on. Virtually all over the place, he says.

the Work consisted mainly in that the walls skillerum. Some of it, you can’t see, when you are on the stations, but which are hiding inside behind.

For it had to master the Flowers and his team spend over 210,000 as lecablokke, each weighs 16,9 kg. And because there goes 10 lecablokke pr. square meters, you can quickly figure out that the team has bricked over 21,000 square feet.

I have worked on many big projects before, but only because there are so many stations, it must here probably be the biggest, says Michael Flowers.

As any commuter in the capital by is the metro stations well hidden away under the earth.

for The same reason was the majority of the murernes work many feet below the street level, down in the underworld moisture and darkness. A somewhat special experience, says Michael Flowers, when as a bricklayer used to work in the daylight.

– Mental, it could well be a bit of an ordeal, and it was not all that liked it. We had people who had to go after only half a day under the ground. But I had it fine down there, he says, and adds:

One day there was an apprentice who didn’t care about it. But then I showed him around down there in 15 minutes, so he could get a sense of it. And afterwards he said: ’It is damn not so bad, the Flowers, as I had been told’. And it seems I’m not, that it was. the

Nothing comes close
in Addition to find themselves deep in the ground had the builders also put up with deep shafts. It was something Michael Flowers had to get used to.

– The deepest shaft was where the escalators were to sit. There was about 30 feet down. In the beginning we could stand and look straight down to the rails at the bottom. It was a little game. But in general, there were shielded well, and gradually the cast we walls. So most came rapidly højdeskrækken, he says.

The new metroring or the city ring, as it is dubbed – is the largest construction project in the capital, since king Christian 4. brought Christianshavn for approximately 400 years ago.

It is a huge construction, which directly or indirectly employs up to 4,500 people. A historic building will, some might say. And that’s how it is for many of them, like Michael Flowers has been helping to build it – it is a work that sticks out, and a man can be proud of.

– This is very different than what I’ve previously been accustomed to. The actual work of the blocks was equal to the højrebenet. But the amount of blocks and walls that would mures up, was something else entirely. Nothing comes near it. I have also heard from my younger colleagues, that it is here metroarbejde is definitely something they will tell their children about, he says.

The last place, Michael Flowers worked on the metro, was at the Fringes, where it took place under Sortedams Lake. Here they had contain the lake up, and the gang worked for months on the construction site in the middle of the lake.

For Michael Flowers is the work on the metro is now over, and metroringen opens after the plan for the summer. Murermesteren thinking, however, is still at work, when he drives past the places where he has bricked up under the ground.

– We talk often about when we drive past the lake every morning and evening, that there we have drunk the coffee and eaten lunch, right there in the middle of the lake. And how are the 15 places in the city, where I’ve gone under the earth, and bony. The work I will probably think about for many years to come.
