Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma) won the 16th stage of the Tour of Spain alone on Tuesday at the top of Bejes, where the Dane put himself back in the race for final victory. Third overall before the stage behind his teammates Sepp Kuss and Primoz Roglic, the winner of the Tour de France took back a little over a minute from them and moved up to second place, 29 seconds behind Kuss.

This is his second stage victory in this Vuelta after his success on Friday at the Tourmalet. When Vingegaard attacked four kilometers from the finish, on the steep and unprecedented final climb towards Bejes, neither Kuss nor Roglic moved, leaving the Dane to take off alone.

The fate of the Vuelta could be decided on Wednesday on the slopes of the frightening Angliru, one of the most difficult passes in Europe (12.3 km at 10.3% with passages at 24%). There will then still be two more mountain stages to make the difference, Thursday and Saturday, on the eve of the arrival in Madrid.
