Nelson Abadia has left his post as coach of the Colombian women’s team, eliminated in the quarter-finals of the last World Cup, the Colombian Football Federation announced on Thursday. “Coach Nelson Abadia and the Colombian Football Federation have terminated their contractual relationship,” the latter wrote in a statement.
The 67-year-old Colombian technician had led the women’s team to the greatest feat in its history: the quarter-finals of the 2023 World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, eliminated 2-1 by England, eventual finalists. Abadia, however, does not enjoy great popularity in his country.
In addition to their journey to the World Cup, the Colombians led by Abadia had been silver medalists at the Pan American Games in Lima in 2019 and finalists of the Copa America 2022 (beaten 1-0 by Brazil in the final). His successor will be “designated in the coming days”, specifies the federation.
