Thursday morning was to sweep the Mats Kjeldsen do as he mostly always does in everyday life. He should sweep the chimney in a dwelling, this time on Nøtterøy in Vestfold.

Before he went up on the roof to sweep, asked the owner of the residence if he could come in and check that the fireplace was properly closed, so that there should occur a leak.

– He told me that he had heard noises from the chimney, but he thought it was the wind that had made the sound the night before, ” says Kjeldsen to Dagbladet.

He opened the ovnsdøra to check that all was well. Inside sat a full grown owl.

Usually, docks and seagulls

Both I and the house owner was surprised. Owl sat completely quiet, so I took off my gloves and carried it out, ” he says.

– the Only solution is to stop the emissions

– Where flapping it straight up a tree and the murmur a bit with the shoreline. I think it was fine.

Kjelsen tells us that it is most often smaller birds, such as docks and seagulls, which gets stuck in the chimney. Someone comes up also all the way down to the fireplace, such as this owl.

Many of the smaller birds are more likely to get out again, while the larger birds have bigger problems, and need help.

We have helped out far larger birds earlier than this owl, it is a known problem.

Can add the wire mesh

Some areas have a particularly rich bird life, and especially the docks and gulls are known to nest in or around the chimney. Then it is easy for the birds to fall down.

Therefore, recommend the fire department to put on the grating or wire mesh, to prevent birds from sticking.

– When we recommend it, or posting pictures in social media, there are fortunately more and more people who choose to follow this, ” says Kjeldsen.
