One of Venezuela’s worst natural disasters occurred in the province of Vargas in december 1999, when Juan Guaidó was 16 years old. Intense and prolonged rainfall led to flooding and landslides that took out villages and people. Upwards of 30,000 people, approximately ten per cent of Vargas’s population, is assumed to have died in the disaster.
