It is in the new issue of the scientific, interdisciplinary journal ‘ Emotion, space and society” study published. In the deals Phil Dodds at the Institute of Geography at the university of Edinburgh what is the significance of Jens layman’s texts in the portrayal of Gothenburg environments.
Layman has, among other things, depicted the gothenburg riots in the song ”Do you remember the riots?” and named one of their cds after the district of Kortedala Night falls over Kortedala”.
Dodds argues that pop music is an important vessel in order to provide geographic locations an emotional significance. As one of the points the study draws Dodds concluded that the layman’s songs and lyrics have a social value in the adding value to places that are otherwise rendered invisible in the dialogue and the media: ”The stigmatized, marginalized the local recognition of the value of song.”
As an example, he mentions the song ”Dandelion seed” and its cartographic survey of the locations in Gothenburg, where the different parts at the same time consolidated with a sense of the residents: ”Make a beeline past the Cathedral / Dripping down Västra Hamngatan / Down to the harbour / To what’s left of this old town / I sit there and listen / To the wind and how it’s playing / Through the cranes over at Hisingen”.
