SVP-Nationalrat Roger Köppel wants to run for the Council of States. “It is a personal decision,” the “world week”-editor-in-chief. This he reported on Thursday morning during a press conference under the title “EU secret plan against Switzerland, and the consequences for my political activity” in Zurich.

the reason for the step was his dissatisfaction with the European policy of Switzerland, which is “strategically insincere”. There is a secret plan in the Federal government in Bern, the involvement of Switzerland in the EU.

Roger Köppel attacks explicitly the President of the Ständeräte Ruedi Noser (FDP) and Daniel Jositsch (SP). “We have two Zürcher Ständeräte with an opinion to Europe, this is wrong”, says Köppel. He has to run against this “cartel of the EU-integration sympathizers”. His candidacy is to bring transparency in the debate.

“My chances are very good,”

Köppel announces, his opponents-specifically in Europe-to question, to challenge, and promises to be “interesting discussions”. He will compete as a “non-partisan SVP-candidate”. As the head of the Committee of the EU-No, he represent its interests.

“It means the Council of States was the chamber of the debate. Debate I can,” says the national Council. In the election campaign, he will compete for both councils – his candidacy for the Council of States does not mean that he will compete again for the national Council. “I think my chances are very good,” says a confident Köppel.

Known for his frequent Absence

His party, he had shortly before the media conference on his plans. Whether it will give further SVP candidates, he did not know, “but that would be good for the competition,” says Köppel. “I need to prove itself,” he adds. He had nobody else to give an undertaking that he will set up.

The 53-year-old “world week”-publisher, was elected in October 2015 for the Zurich SVP with a gloss result, in the national Council. From the list of 17 he made the jump to the top of the SVP candidates. In the national Council, he took a seat on the foreign policy Commission. He was known for his frequent Absence at the Council meetings.
