Three people were killed in the attack at the christmas market in Strasbourg on Tuesday evening. In addition, a fourth person declared brain-dead.
Chekatt managed to escape, but was found two days later by three police officers who patrolled in the neighbourhood of Neudorf. 29-year-old tried first to escape, but when the police identified themselves he turned and began to shoot.
– Two of the police responded with shooting back several times, and they killed him, ” says Heitz, and adds that it was found a handgun, a knife and ammunition on Chekatts body.

29-year-old was born in Strasbourg and had previously been sentenced a number of times, including for theft. He was also on the French government’s blacklist of potential extremists, and should, according to the witnesses to have shouted “Allahu akbar” as he began to fire away at the christmas market in Strasbourg.
Jihadistgruppa ICE has claimed that Chekatt acted on behalf of them. France’s interior minister Christophe Castaner calls the claim “opportunistic”.
– This completely opportunistic assertion from the ICE changes nothing. What we have to do is a man who was consumed by evil, ” he says.
the Christmas market reopened
While the French authorities continued the investigation of Chekatt and his possible accomplice, could be a relieved Strasbourg on Friday, finally re-open its popular christmas market.
