The Chinese Pan Zhanle, who broke the world record in the 100m freestyle on Sunday, was eliminated in the 200m heats on Monday at the Doha Swimming World Championships. Pan achieved the 38th time in the series in 1 min 51 sec 03, a time far from his personal best of 1 min 44 sec 65 and insufficient to reach the semi-finals scheduled for Monday evening.

On Sunday, the 19-year-old swimmer created a huge surprise by breaking the 100m freestyle world record during the 4x100m relay final won by China. With a time of 46 sec 80/100th, he took six hundredths off the previous record held by the Romanian David Popovici. The other surprise of the morning came from the elimination of the Lithuanian Ruta Meilutyte, defending champion, in the 100m breaststroke heats.
