Canadian Bianca Andreescu, winner of the 2019 US Open, has withdrawn from the 2023 edition which begins on Monday due to an injury, tournament organizers announced on Saturday, without specifying the nature.

The 23-year-old lost in the first round of the first two hardcourt North American summer tour tournaments, in Washington and Montreal. She then revealed that she suffered from back pain and had given up playing in Cincinnati, the final preparation tournament for the US Open.

Andreescu had risen to No. 4 in the world in October 2019, weeks after beating Queen Serena Williams in the final at Flushing Meadows. She is ranked 51st in the WTA this week.

The Canadian was scheduled to face Ukrainian Lesia Tsurenko in the first round and will be replaced by a player drafted from qualifying.
