American Coco Gauff won the fourth title of her career on Sunday by defeating Greek Maria Sakkari in straight sets 6-2, 6-3 in the final of the Washington tournament. It is the second of the season for the young player, aged 19, who won in Auckland at the very beginning of the year.
She knew how to react after the disappointment of her elimination in the first round of Wimbledon a month ago. “It was difficult, I’m happy to have managed to bounce back,” said the 7th in the world, finalist for Roland-Garros in 2022.
Seeded N.3, she flew over the Washington tournament, a WTA 500, where she did not give up a set of the week. She clearly dominated Sakkari in the final despite having lost four of her previous five matches against her.
Sakkari’s difficulties in the finals have been confirmed, the 28-year-old Greek still having only one title to her name, the Moroccan Open in 2019, for six lost finals.
