Most considered Israel the Occident in the Orient. Because Israel was founded, shaped and led by the majority of Zionists of Western European and especially Eastern European origin, the “Ashkenazim”. These largely non-religious veterans and their descendants, Israel’s ideal and material “aristocracy,” were equated with Israel as a whole. Wrong, now completely wrong.
