When images first surfaced on social media Wednesday of T-54 and T-55 tanks being hauled from military depots and hauled across Russia by train, it sparked a wave of disbelief and derision among military pundits.
Apparently, Moscow has now lost so many more modern tanks in the war against Ukraine that it now has to fall back on these very old models, which were developed after the end of World War II and became the dominant tank model in the Soviet Union in the late 1950s. “That’s a damn good tank – for 1957,” said Mark Hertling, former supreme commander of the US Army in Europe.
