Hundreds of people protested in Berlin on Saturday against the plans of the CDU and SPD to form a coalition. According to the organizers, around 2,000 people took part in a demonstration that led from Hermannplatz in Neukölln in the direction of Mitte. The police spoke of about 800 participants.
An alliance of various civil society initiatives, which see a “regression coalition” in an alliance of CDU and SPD, had called for the demo. In rent policy, climate and transport policy or domestic policy, they fear that what they see as progress made under Red-Green-Red will be reversed under Black-Red.
“Berlin could become a CDU-governed city again from May,” says a call for the demonstration. “This must not happen. Because Berlin needs a social, non-discriminatory, climate-friendly and participatory policy.” Banners from demonstrators read “Never CDU” or “Berlin resists”. Politicians from the Greens and the Left also took part in the procession.
Coalition negotiations are currently underway between the election winners, the CDU and the SPD. They should be completed by the end of the month.
