Members of the protest group “Last Generation” are de facto no longer allowed to enter the Bundestag. Since autumn 2022, their representatives had been invited by MPs more than ten times. In all cases, however, the meetings had to take place outside Parliament because they had been refused entry. The reason was doubts about the “reliability of the activists”, a spokesman for the Bundestag administration explained to the “Spiegel”.
Because those invited had apparently already been noticed because of blockade or sabotage actions, there were security concerns. After plans to overthrow a “Reichsbürger” group and incidents with “lateral thinkers” and right-wing extremists who had entered the Bundestag as guests became known, the parliamentary administration recently tightened the entry rules.
The access restrictions cause a lack of understanding among the activists of the “last generation”, but also among members of parliament. “I think it’s problematic to ban dialogue across the board in the Bundestag,” said Green MP Johannes Wagner, who had invited members of the “Last Generation”. Parliament should be “a place for an open exchange”.
The “Last Generation” had previously promised “never to plan or carry out disruptive actions when we are invited as guests in the Bundestag”.
