Second division football club FC St. Pauli has sharply condemned insults against its players Maurides Roque Junior and Oladapo Afolayan. According to the club on Monday, Maurides was “insulted dozens of times” on a social media platform after the game against 1. FC Kaiserslautern (1-0). This includes racist comments and messages. Afolayan was also “racially insulted”.
“Racism has no place at the Millerntor and cannot be justified by anything,” wrote the Hamburg club on its website. “This should apply to all stadiums, curves and also to so-called social media.” The incidents showed in a “bitter way how important it is to speak out and engage against racism continuously and again and again”. The St. Pauli players played against 1. FC Kaiserslautern on Sunday with a special jersey with the lettering “No place for racism”.
