Shopping lists, cool ideas and important reminders: In the digital age you are probably writing less and less on paper and instead typing on your mobile phone. This change has its advantages, after all, most of us always have our mobile phones with us.
The messenger service WhatsApp is introducing a new function so that users can bundle their cell phone notes in one place. “Message Yourself” is the name of the feature and it should enable users to write themselves messages and send voice recordings. In the coming weeks, the function for iPhones and Android cell phones will be introduced worldwide, reports the US online medium “TechCrunch”. It is already available to users via WhatsApp Web.
To use the feature, you must first start a new chat. To do this, click on the green message symbol. Your own phone number should then appear at the top of the WhatsApp contact list. If you click on the number, the “self-talk” can begin. Messages, files, pictures or voice recordings – what you send is up to you.
Should you use the “Message Yourself” function regularly in the future, the message history with yourself should always be easy to find in the chat list. You can also pin the personal chat to the top of the list so that you can find your notes quickly.
So far, WhatsApp users have only been able to send messages to themselves via the “Click-to-Chat” function. Actually, the feature is there to start a chat with a person without having their phone number saved in your phone’s address book. Users could also set up a chat with themselves via the URL wa.me.
“Message Yourself” should make the whole thing much easier. According to the website WABetaInfo, the function was tested with beta testers at the end of October.
Other messenger services are far ahead of WhatsApp. At the competitor Signal, for example, users can use the “Note to Self” function within the app to make notes. To find their notes, users have to search for “note to self” in the app. They are not pinned to chats.
Apps like Facebook Messenger and Slack, which is mostly used for professional communication, design their note-taking functions a little differently. Here, users can chat with themselves, as will soon be the case with WhatsApp. On Facebook Messenger, you have to search for your own name to find your message history. On Slack, personal chat is listed first under Direct Messages.
