It is said that on Sunday evening he drove to the training ground on Säbener Strasse in Munich for an MRI scan. The result was available on Monday morning – and it wasn’t a good one: Leroy Sané, the FC Bayern international, will miss the record champions for a few games in the final sprint before the World Cup.

The 26-year-old tore a muscle fiber in his left rear thigh in the 5-0 win against SC Freiburg in the Bundesliga on Sunday, as the German champions announced on Monday. A downtime was not named.

After his strong performance against Freiburg, Bayern have to do without Sané for the first time this Wednesday (8.45 p.m. / ZDF / Sky) in the difficult DFB Cup game at FC Augsburg. In all likelihood, coach Julian Nagelsmann will again have to do without the ailing national goalkeeper Manuel Neuer (shoulder). It is also uncertain whether Thomas Müller will play due to muscular problems in his back. After all, Kingsley Coman is available again on offense. The Frenchman was suspended against Freiburg.

Sané’s failure hits Bayern because the international was currently shining on the offensive as a goalscorer and playmaker. He recently developed even more in the tenth position: “He can do everything when he shows that body language,” said sports director Hasan Salihamidzic in praise of the noble technician and goalscorer Sané on Sunday evening. “Leroy has a left adhesive that rarely anyone has. That’s how we want to see him. So he can win hearts for a long time.” That has now been stopped for the time being.

The news of the failure does not only affect Bayern, but also the national team. There are currently no international matches, but on November 14th – in four weeks time – the flight to the World Cup training camp in Oman. It now remains to be seen how quickly Sané will recover.
