Brazil’s prisons are overcrowded. Often it comes to violent clashes. Now, the authorities reported that 42 prisoners were killed within one day – all in the same city.

In four prisons in the Northern Brazilian city of Manaus have been killed within a day, at least 42 prisoners. The bodies had not exhibited “any signs of a choking death,” and informed the authorities of the Federal state of Amazonas. For more information on the circumstances of the deaths were not made.

The Ministry of justice and public security sent a special unit to Manaus. “I’ve just spoken with (justice) Minister Sérgio Moro, sends an intervention team in the state of Amazonas,” said the Governor of the state, Wilson Lima. “He can help us in this Moment of crisis, and in the case of the national Problem: The Problem with the prisons.”

Only a day earlier, had come during unrest in a prison in Manaus, 15 prisoners were killed. Some of them were strangled. The gefänfgnis authority reported that earlier fighting had broken out.

Brazil is the country with the third largest number of prisoners in the world. In June of 2016, about twice as many were imprisoned in the prisons of the country 726.712 people – how there was detention places. In the crowded prisons there are always deadly clashes, mutinies and escape attempts.
