The former army chief Gantz of the Israeli elections against Prime Minister Netanyahu. He enjoys a great confidence among the disaffected citizens.

Tel Aviv, at the end of January. It is the first great election of the former General Benny Gantz. From the speakers, a choice of fight song sounds. Neither politically left nor to the right, the party of the candidate, it says. Gantz want to do it, not all, but many voters right.

His big goal is under suspicion of corruption, the Prime Minister of Israel,Benjamin Netanyahu, after ten years in office to replace. “We all deserve a leader who gets up in the morning and think of us. We need a government that solves our real problems, and not only of the self-employed. Therefore, I thank Prime Minister Netanyahu for his services. We are now going to take over,” says Gantz.

The 59-Year-old is married and has four children. He is the son of a Holocaust Survivor from Hungary. In the election campaign, Gantz is waving in the crowd, like the professional politicians do. But the tall man is not a professional politician. He sometimes looks a little awkward.

Benny Gantz – 59 years old, married, four children. He is not a professional politician, and that is for him an advantage.

Formerly the highest soldier in the country

Its popularity has not hurt. On The Contrary. Because Gantz is not supposed to come across as an experienced politician. He was formerly the chief of staff of the Israeli army, and thus the highest soldier in the country.

From the point of view of the Israeli political scientist Yoram Peri, this is a great advantage for Gantz: “The Israelis are the policy very skeptical. When surveys look at who the Israelis trust, comes first the army,” says Peri. At the very bottom of politicians, parties and the media followed. “You think The generals are willing to sacrifice their lives for the Nation. The politicians, however, only care about themselves,” says Peri.

Gantz had given not a single Interview, as he was according to surveys, already one of the most popular candidates. Also an elderly woman in a shopping centre in Tel Aviv is from him convinced:

“We don’t know him that well yet. We don’t know much about him. But he exudes for me, the ‘officer and a Gentleman’, and for this he will get my vote.”

hardness against Hamas demanded

Because he does not want to rely only on the arms bonus, said Gantz, but then to political positions. Of a supposedly left wing, in front of the competitor Netanyahu warns at every opportunity, is not much to see.

An agreement with Iran, Gantz rejects – as Netanyahu. Against Hamas in the Gaza strip, he is demanding that Netanyahu is even harsher. A possible two-state solution with the Palestinians Gantz is not mentioned at all.

Vague statements in the election campaign

Israel will not give up control over the Jordan valley and large settlement blocks in the West Bank. Nevertheless, he urges the Israelis and Palestinians to live in the future, separate from each other. “We will not allow millions of Palestinians behind the separation barrier threatening our security and our identity as a Jewish state.”

Whether and how a Palestinian state can arise, when Israel occupied large parts of the West Bank, Gantz betrayed. On other subjects he stayed in the election campaign, vague and not established. Neither politically left nor right – as it is said in the election campaign song in Tel Aviv. With this tactic, Gantz seems to have, according to the surveys success. It is scarce – but it is possible that the former army chief for the next Prime Minister of Israel.
