Although the word mulled wine is relatively new (it comes with Swedish glögg), so has the tradition of warm, spiced wine goes back a long way. Already in the antiquity well-known greeks to sweet and spice wine. Under the inspiration of the French brulôt began in the 17. century to serve warm the cognac with melted sugar. Later was the cognac is replaced with wine, and the drink came to look similar to today’s mulled wine more and more.
It was only toward the end of the 19. century, that mulled wine was a christmas tradition. No one knows anymore how it happened, but probably it was a hot and sweet drink are welcome at the midwinter. The tradition was helped on its way by enterprising business people, and around the year 1900 found Swedish spritfabrikanter to provide gløggflaskerne with colorful labels with christmas elves and other christmas figurines. Today is mulled wine in many varieties – with or without alcohol – has become a staple of most people’s ideas about christmas. There appears also more and more finished gløggprodukter up on the market. Unfortunately, there is a tendency to the formulated mulled wine becomes sweeter and sweeter, which is a great contrast to the mulled wine to get the southern in Europe. Furthermore, more manufacturers, less wine and more water, which certainly doesn’t make a wine better. Let’s hope there comes a response so we can get a better quality mulled wine back without near as much sugar.
