In the name dispute with Macedonia will bring a renaming of the southern Balkan country to the breakthrough. But, above all, the Greek nationalists fight back: defence Minister of the country resigned in Protest.
Greek defence Minister, Panos Kammenos of the right-wing populist party Independent Greeks (Anel) is in the name dispute with Macedonia from the government. He give up because of the Macedonia question, his office, his party withdraw from the government, said Kammenos after a Meeting with the head of government Alexis Tsipras.
resignation shortly before the Parliament vote
The decision was made shortly before the vote in the Greek Parliament on the new name of Macedonia. “The Macedonian question does not allow me to sacrifice my job,” said Kammenos. “I thanked the Prime Minister for the cooperation and explained to him that we can’t do that because of this national issue.” The Anel-chief had threatened because of the name dispute in the past repeatedly with his resignation.
Prime Minister Tsipras sees his government is still in danger. He would ask in Parliament the question of Confidence, he told journalists in Athens. Tsipras plans up to the parliamentary elections in October of this year, with the votes of independent members and parliamentarians of smaller parties to govern. The previous coalition partner, Anel has in the Greek Parliament, only about seven seats, but in the past four years, with all major decisions taken by the majority procurers for the Premier.
renaming decided
Previously had decided the Macedonian Parliament, the renaming of the southern Balkan country in the North of Macedonia and thus its part for the settlement of the dispute with Greece fulfilled. For the corresponding amendment of the Constitution 81 of the 120 deputies voted, so that the required two-thirds majority was narrowly achieved. There were neither votes against nor abstentions. The nationalist Opposition boycotted the vote.
After the independence, in the process of the disintegration of Yugoslavia in 1991, the country was under the name Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (abbreviation: FYROM) a member of the United Nations. Greece has since been a name change, because a province in the North of the country also bears the name Macedonia (Greek: Makedonia).
The renaming of the country is a key condition for Macedonia to settle the name dispute with Greece. Thus, the way to inclusion in NATO and EU for Macedonia, what has blocked Athens yet.
