On Friday, a suspect was arrested in Milwaukee after entering a Police station and firing on officers. This happened just days after a Black man aged 20 died in custody at that same station.
The suspect fled on foot after being struck in the chest by police. Two blocks later, he was captured near the intersection of Sixth Street and Locust Streets, FOX6 Milwaukee reported.
The incident occurred just after 3:00 p.m. CT.
The suspect, a Milwaukee man aged 23, was taken to hospital for treatment of his non-fatal injuries.
Norman stated that investigators were investigating a motive for this attack.
Death is deemed an accident
The department suspended three officers after Keishon Thomas died in District 5 custody earlier this week. Police attempted to assist Thomas but the medical examiner declared Thomas’ death accidental.
It wasn’t immediately clear if the attack was connected to Thomas’s death.
Norman stated, “We are still looking at all angles of it.”
Wisconsin law requires that officers involved in “critical incidents”, or any other type of incident, must be placed on administrative duty. An outside agency must also be summoned to assist with the investigation.
According to Milwaukee police, there were seven officers involved. They were between four- and fourteen years old.
Norman stated that the West Allis Police Department would handle the investigation into the shooting at the police station. It is located approximately 6 miles west from the city. Thomas’s death is being investigated by the nearby Waukesha police department.
Norman stated that Friday’s attack shaken up the District 5 station staff as well as members of the community.
Norman stated, “I’m very proud to my staff.” “We are very proud of the way they handled themselves…and we’re wrapping ourselves around them.”
