The last fighters of the Warsaw Ghetto uprising is dead. Simcha Rotem died at the age of 94 years in Israel, informed the President of Israel, Reuven Rivlin. The President recalled the commitment of the Jewish resistance fighter against the Nazis and praised him as a champion for humanity. Red was one of the few Ghetto residents who survived the uprising of 1943.
Almost one month of fighting the Germans
19. April 1943 had begun the Rebellion of the Jewish insurgents, who fought against SS units. The almost month-long battle against the Germans failed at 16. May 1943.
His bloody crackdown on the fate of most hitherto surviving Warsaw Jews, who had before the war a third of the population sealed. Thousands were shot to death or deportation to the death camps.
in Red, also known as Kazik Ratajzer, was able to flee after heavy Fighting against the SS-units, with other comrades, by a sewer from the destroyed Ghetto.
“His story will be with us always”
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu paid tribute to Red. These have fought “against the Nazis and the Jews saved”, he tweeted. After his immigration he had reported in Israel many people of his exploits. “His story and the story of the uprising will accompany our people forever.”
