The German Association of cities sees urgent need for action in the relief of inner cities from massively increasing delivery traffic. “We need innovative solutions for the so-called last mile,” said urban President Markus Lewe on Tuesday the daily mirror. Due to the fast-growing online trading, the number of delivered packages has increased dramatically in recent years. “More and more suppliers are pushing on the streets of the cities and ensure a high level of traffic and pollution,” said Lewe. The courier, Express and parcel industry (CEP) transported in 2018, computationally more than 500,000 shipments per day. According to the Association of parcel and Express logistics around 300 million shipments were delivered during the Christmas season to end-users. The Association of cities requested the package provider, “their vehicles to more environmentally friendly drive technologies”. In addition, the logistics concepts would have to be improved and the utilization of the vehicles increased, in total, fewer delivery trucks are on the road. The Federal government provides “immediate action program Clean air – 2017-2020” around 1.5 billion euros for municipalities which are affected by the EU limit values are exceeded.
