Granddaughter and daughter of Armenians, Hélène Ségara spoke this Sunday morning to our colleagues at RTL on the situation in Armenian Nagorno-Karabakh.
Words devoid of acrimony, even emphasizing the aspiration of part of the Azeri people not to descend into war: “There are many political situations which worsen because of a few men. Most people want peace,” the singer declared in the preamble.
Before adding, disappointed: “We actually feel helpless. Armenians write to me saying “Madame Ségara made of something”. But what can I do? I can sit at a table with an Azeri and say “are we enemies”. And I think that when someone is in front of you, if there is no politics, we are not enemies. We are brothers.”
“I know that there are Armenians who are suffering and I also know that there are people from the opposite camp who don’t want that. I’m sure of it,” adds Hélène Ségara, before estimating that it’s “these people who could make things happen.”

On September 19, Azerbaijan launched an offensive in Armenian Nagorno-Karabakh. At the end of this intensive attack by Baku’s troops, the Armenian forces laid down their arms. Since then, more than 100,000 refugees have fled to Armenia. In a few days, more than 80% of the 120,000 official inhabitants left their homes for fear of reprisals by burning their personal belongings before joining the column of refugees.
