The best of the web Under the wooden floorboards of a hotel on the British Isle of Man, were construction workers at a renovation in 1998, a closed tin with christmas cookies and a card with ‘love from mama’. The christmas present was during the Second world War, sent to sailor Able ‘Seaman’ Davis, that the tin under the floor of his room and hid until decades later, until was found. The cookies look so, eighty years later, still edible.

The tin with mince pies – traditional English christmas cookies with chopped – and the enclosed note with ‘love from mama’ was already in 1998 when a renovation is found in the Lock Hotel in Douglas on the Isle of Man, a British island in the Irish Sea between the United Kingdom and Ireland, and then to disappear in the archives of the local Manx museum, where it now éindelijk recovered.

The tin of cookies came with a note, in which the mother of Able Davis talks about life in Birmingham, where the family lived. The were the hard times: different family members had to “maps for money” and a room in the house was rented out to guests. “We will be glad to see you when you leave”, writes the mother to her son.
