New Family-Friendly Gravel Route Unveiled in Halle: “21 km with 300 Altitude Meters”

In Halle, a new gravel route has been opened for families. The city is doing this in anticipation of the upcoming World Gravel Championship that will kick off in Halle this fall. Gravel is a cycling sport that takes place on unpaved roads.

On Saturday, October 5, and Sunday, October 6, 2024, the World Championship for gravel bikes will take place in Flanders. The battle for the world title on unpaved roads will be contested between Halle and Leuven. Leading up to this gravel World Championship, the city of Halle is launching a new gravel route.

“This is a family-friendly gravel route of 21 km,” says Pieter Busselot, Alderman of Sports (CD&V). “It includes 300 meters of altitude difference. So, you should be quite experienced to participate. It will take you through the Hallerbos along various beautiful paths to the Lembeekbos. Along the way, you will see graffiti artwork and designated picnic areas.”

By July, the entire gravel route should be signposted, allowing you to start the route at your own pace. The city of Halle is also considering other initiatives in light of the World Gravel Championship. “We are looking into the possibility of organizing a youth World Championship. We want to immerse the city in a World Championship atmosphere with flags, for example. There are still many ideas that will be communicated later,” says Alderman Busselot.
